Career pathway

Aviation & Aerospace

Apply mathematics to navigation, flight planning, aircraft performance, safety analysis, and aerospace systems. This is what a Grade 10 student actually learns on the CMP Aviation pathway.

Pathway insight

Mathematics keeps aircraft flying

Every flight plan, fuel calculation, and safety check relies on mathematics. Students learn the numbers that pilots and engineers actually use.

From topic to cockpit

Statistics, probability, and performance data become tools for weather analysis, route planning, aircraft performance, and safety reporting, not abstract exercises.

Portfolio, not just tests

Each term ends with a portfolio task, a short operations-style report where the student uses the mathematics to justify a flight, safety, or performance decision.

What students learn: Grade 10 Aviation & Aerospace Course Planner

Four terms, each anchored to a real area of aviation and aerospace practice. Four sample topics from every term are shown below.

Term 1

Flight Telemetry, Aircraft Measurement & Aviation Data

Assessment Task 1

Sample topics

  • Aircraft measurement indicators
  • Flight telemetry variables
  • Altitude and airspeed data
  • Measuring aircraft flight performance
Flight insight: Differentiate between an aviation population (e.g. all flights in a route network) and a sample (e.g. selected flights analysed for telemetry quality).

Term 2

Navigation Systems, Flight Operations & Performance Modelling

Assessment Task 2

Sample topics

  • Navigation events
  • Route outcomes
  • Flight-risk categories
  • Operational decision points
Flight insight: Distinguish independent and mutually exclusive aviation events (e.g. a route delay and a separate maintenance hold).

Term 3

Aircraft Inspection, Aviation Safety & Decision Making

Assessment Task 3

Sample topics

  • Inspection tables
  • Airframe conditions
  • Maintenance outcomes
  • Safety decisions
Flight insight: Organize aircraft inspection results into a two-way table comparing actual defect status with inspection result.

Term 4

Flight Systems, Telemetry & Flight Performance Optimization

Year-End Milestone Assessment

Sample topics

  • Altitude percentiles
  • Airspeed quartiles
  • Fuel-use baselines
  • Telemetry profiles
Flight insight: Use percentiles, quartiles and IQR to establish baseline ranges for flight-system performance data.
